Army Day

Sanjana Harbola, Gujarat

What brings Canoe together? The simple fact that we’re all fauji B.R.A.T.S. (born, raised and transferred) - something we take so much pride in. Being BRATS is just the reason why 15 January for us is not just an average day of the Pongal holidays but a majoooorrrrr moment of ghamand - army day jo hai.

Now something I’ve always wondered about Army Day: Everywhere is literally the same. Every year. The same band plays the same desh-bhakti songs, there are speeches, parades, op-demo, etcetera. But still, fauji families and civilians look forward to these celebrations with a pretty high level of enthusiasm. Why? What is it about these events that even if they're the same each year, every person is on their balconies and terraces with chai and pakoras, watching the whole program?

After I finished my exams, I had a lot of time. So here's what I thought of:

Think of a time when team India lost a cricket match. There were a lot of frustrated people breaking TVs, trolling the team and not required for criticism. Basically, there have been times when the public has not been in support of the Indian cricket team. But have you ever seen this happening with the Army? Whatever the circumstances, not one person has said anything wrong or protested against the army. In fact, just the opposite happens- the public stands with the army, offering their support. Every Indian, irrespective of any factor- religion, caste, gender, age, educational qualification- comes to support the Indian army in any situation. Such is the power of the Indian army- in literal terms it brings everyone together under one banner.

Another reason could probably be the perfection in the putting up of these programs. The army plans and puts together programs with a huge amount of discipline and meticulousness. It’s all thought out and conducted in such a short span of time and the public love to see the showcase of valor with extreme perfection.

This year, probably because of covid there won’t be any grand celebrations. But while you’re sitting out with your families on terraces and balconies enjoying those garam chai and pakoras, think of the brave army officials out there and take a moment to keep them in your prayers.

Time to take leave my friends.

*sends a crisp salute your way*

Jai Hind
