February – The Month of Love...and More!

February – The Month of Love...and More!

Zaara Sodhi, Mumbai

After you have commemorated all the January fetes, it’s time to flip the calendar. Yep, it’s that month of the year where couples indulge in all things cheesy, ranging from chocolates to roses. The days leading up to Valentine’s Day is unofficially known as “Valentine’s week”. It commences on 7th February with rose day and ends on Valentine’s Day (making us feel single all the way!).

But if you thought that February was all about love and courtship, then you are gravely mistaken. There is still an entire week that is dedicated to Anti-Valentine’s because you don’t always get the happy ending that you are looking for. This week commences with slap day (ouch!) and ends with breakup day and is a week of complete chaos and possible heartbreak. The week is about everything that isn’t love, from perfume day (still don’t know what that’s for) to Confession Day. We are pretty sure some hearts are going to shatter this cold season :”). A few rather unconventional days that are celebrated during this month are National Dark Chocolate Day, Bubble Gum Day and National Pizza Day (yum!).

The question that now comes up is why are there so many ‘designated’ days in February? Well, it definitely is a good opportunity for businesses to advertise their goods and products during this time of the month. According to Hallmark, a whopping 145 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged (and that’s not even including all those handmade cards kids exchange in the classroom). We might think that candies and flowers are the most common gifts given during Valentine’s Day, but according to the National Retail Federation, the category that is most spent on is jewellery followed by clothing, candies and flowers. Another reason why so many days are celebrated is because today’s generation likes to live in the moment and memorialise each and every event celebrated, especially in a month where emotions are at an all-time high. In the era of social media, every day is a celebration or an adventure to wake up to.

I think we all can agree that February has a great deal to offer. Some of it is traditional while the rest is quirky and fun. The month of love has something in store for everyone and though some of us might not get that euphoric ending we expected, Netflix and a delicious slice of pizza come a close second!
